The Oshawa Generals shutout of the Peterborough Petes on Friday gave home fans a decisive response to the previous night’s overtime defeat. Matthew Humphries stopped all 30 shots he faced in a 5-0 victory at the Tribute Communities Centre on October 23.

It was Humphries’ first career Ontario Hockey League shutout, according to the Generals’ game report. Oshawa also moved ahead of Peterborough into fourth place in the East Division, with one point separating the rivals after the result.

The teams were completing a home-and-home series. Peterborough had won Thursday’s meeting 5-4 in overtime, making Friday’s result a split of the two games rather than a repeat of the earlier contest.

Short-handed goal puts Oshawa ahead

Linus Funck supplied the only goal of the first period while Oshawa was short-handed. A loose puck along the neutral-zone boards developed into a two-on-one opportunity, and Funck finished the play for his first career OHL short-handed goal.

The opening period included nine penalties. Oshawa did not score on its three power plays in the frame, while Peterborough failed to convert either of its two opportunities and conceded Funck’s goal with the extra skater.

Tyler Hinde extended the lead in the second period by staying with a chance in front of the net and converting after his initial attempt was stopped. The goal was his fifth of the season, the club reported.

Kane Cloutier then made it 3-0 late in the period when a puck he sent toward the front of the net deflected off a Peterborough player’s skate and went in. It was Cloutier’s third goal of the season.

Generals finish the rematch strongly

Anthony Timmerman added Oshawa’s fourth goal early in the third. He controlled a pass through the neutral zone and finished a two-on-one for his first goal of the season.

Jacob Therrien completed the scoring with his first goal as a General, taking a pass from Aiden O’Donnell and finishing a between-the-legs shot near the net. Oshawa protected its lead through the final minutes while Humphries completed the shutout.

The five-goal performance brought Oshawa’s total to nine goals across the two rivalry games. Unlike Thursday, when the Generals could not hold their third-period advantage, Friday ended with a regulation win and no goals allowed.

Oshawa’s next scheduled game is at home against the Sudbury Wolves on Sunday, October 25, with puck drop at 6:05 p.m. The game account and upcoming start time were published by the Generals; Daily Durham also reported Friday’s result and Humphries’ shutout.
