The Fieldgate Sports Complex has officially been handed over to the Town of Whitby, allowing municipal employees to begin final preparations ahead of the recreation facility’s grand opening on September 12.
The transfer from construction contractor Ledcor took place in late July and marks the transition from major construction work to operational readiness. With the town now in possession of the building, staff can install furniture and equipment, test facility systems, train employees and prepare each area for public use.
Outdoor construction and landscaping work will continue during the weeks leading up to the official opening.
Town begins final preparations
Town staff are now commissioning building systems and completing the tasks required to make the complex fully operational.
The work includes installing equipment and furnishings, preparing program spaces, training recreation and facility employees and ensuring that safety and operating procedures are in place.
Whitby Mayor Elizabeth Roy described the handover as the result of years of planning, collaboration and public consultation.
More than 7,000 residents contributed feedback during the planning and design process. The town says that input helped shape the amenities and services included in the complex.
The facility is intended to support Whitby’s growing population while providing additional space for recreation, organized sports, wellness programs and community activities.
Arenas receive early use
Although the official opening is scheduled for September, portions of the Fieldgate Sports Complex have already welcomed athletes and visitors.
The facility’s arenas were used during the Ontario Lacrosse Festival over the August long weekend. The tournament is described as the world’s largest youth lacrosse event and gave participants an early opportunity to use part of the new complex.
Only the arena areas were available during the tournament. The aquatics centre, gymnasium, walking track and outdoor facilities remain closed while final construction, equipment installation and staff preparation continue.
Major investment in recreation
The Fieldgate Sports Complex represents an investment of approximately $155 million by the Town of Whitby.
Located west of Baldwin Street South and south of Highway 407 in Brooklin, the facility includes twin arenas, an aquatics centre, a double gymnasium, a walking track and several community and program rooms.
Outdoor amenities will include sports fields, tennis and pickleball courts, basketball courts, a skatepark and a pump track.
The town has described the project as its most significant recreation development to date and a key part of Whitby’s Community Strategic Plan.
The complex is expected to increase available recreation space and help meet rising demand from local sports organizations, families and residents.
Outdoor work continues
Construction crews will remain active outside the building during the final weeks before the opening.
The remaining work includes finishing outdoor recreation spaces, landscaping and completing other site improvements. These activities are not expected to change the planned September 12 opening, although construction schedules can be affected by weather and other site conditions.
Town employees will also continue preparing indoor spaces that were not used during the lacrosse tournament.
Grand opening planned for September 12
Whitby plans to celebrate the official opening of the Fieldgate Sports Complex with a free public event on Saturday, September 12.
The celebration is expected to include family activities, community partner displays and opportunities for visitors to explore the facility’s indoor and outdoor amenities.
Additional event details are expected to be announced closer to the opening date.
Once fully operational, the complex will serve as a major recreation and sports hub for Whitby and the wider Durham Region community.
