Lowery was 95 and in his 96th year, according to his obituary, which lists his birth date as October 23, 1930. He was widely known in Orono for decades of service to local hockey, soccer and community recreation.
Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster said Lowery’s contributions helped shape amateur athletics in the village. In a municipal statement, Foster described him as an exceptional citizen whose influence could be seen in Orono’s hockey arenas and soccer fields. He also noted that Lowery had been named Clarington’s Senior of the Year in 2013.
Gord Lowery Orono Legacy Built Through Local Sports
Lowery served as a former president and long-standing board member of the Orono Amateur Athletic Association. The organization credits him with helping support and expand minor hockey and soccer programs for generations of local players and families.
His involvement was not limited to meetings or administrative work. The association recalls that he took particular pride in maintaining the grass used by Orono’s soccer program and regularly attended hockey games at the local arena, regardless of the age group playing.
Lowery also contributed to the development and long-term success of the Orono Arena and Community Centre. The facility opened in April 1979 and became an important centre for recreation and community life in the village. Municipal records also show Lowery continuing to participate in the arena board’s governance years later.
Tournament Carries Lowery’s Name
The Orono Amateur Athletic Association established the annual Gord Lowery Classic hockey tournament to recognize his impact on local sport. The 2026 tournament is scheduled to run from December 21 to December 30 at the Orono Arena and includes several youth divisions.
The association says the tournament honours the many players and families Lowery supported over the years. Its name ensures that future participants will continue learning about the volunteer whose work helped strengthen recreation in Orono.
Lowery had also been recognized locally as “Mr. Soccer,” reflecting his particularly strong connection to the sport. His contributions, however, extended across hockey, soccer and the broader management of community recreational facilities.
A Life Closely Connected to Orono
Lowery’s obituary says he worked at General Motors in Oshawa until age 65. Earlier in his life, he worked at the Co-op in Orono and spent considerable time farming at his family property in Kirby.
He was married to Marj Lowery for 70 years and was a father and grandfather. His obituary remembers him as deeply proud of his family and closely connected to the communities where he lived and worked.
Foster extended condolences on behalf of Clarington council and the municipality to Lowery’s relatives, friends and everyone mourning his death. The Orono Amateur Athletic Association also recognized his contributions to the village and its sports programs.
