Durham July 26 Weather Turns Unsettled

Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa and southern Clarington can expect increasing cloudiness around midday.

Environment Canada forecasts a 40 per cent chance of afternoon showers with a risk of a thunderstorm. The temperature is expected to reach 28 C, but humidity could make conditions feel closer to 34.

The UV index is forecast at eight, which is considered very high. People spending time outside should use sunscreen, wear protective clothing and seek shade during the strongest afternoon sunlight.

At 1 p.m., Oshawa Executive Airport reported mostly cloudy conditions and a temperature of approximately 26 C. The humidex was 29, with a south wind of 17 kilometres per hour.

The storm risk continues into Sunday evening. Southern Durham should become partly cloudy overnight, with a 40 per cent chance of showers and a thunderstorm during the evening. The overnight low is expected to reach 19 C.

Northern Durham Faces Higher Rain Chance

Uxbridge, Scugog and Brock have a greater chance of showers and thunderstorms Sunday.

Environment Canada forecasts a mixture of sun and cloud with a 60 per cent chance of showers and a risk of thunderstorms. The daytime high should reach approximately 27 C, with a humidex of 34 and a very high UV index of eight.

The 60 per cent shower risk will continue through the evening. Fog patches could develop overnight as temperatures fall to approximately 17 C.

Residents in Uxbridge, Port Perry, Beaverton and surrounding rural communities should remain alert when attending outdoor events, using trails, boating or visiting beaches. Thunderstorms can develop quickly and may produce sudden heavy rain, lightning and gusty winds.

Take Precautions During Thunderstorms

People should move inside a substantial building or enclosed vehicle when thunder is heard.

Boaters and swimmers should leave the water before storms arrive, while residents should secure lightweight patio furniture and other loose outdoor items.

Drivers may encounter reduced visibility during heavier showers. Motorists should slow down, leave additional stopping distance and avoid driving through flooded roads.

People should also remember that the absence of a weather warning does not mean thunderstorms cannot occur. Alerts are issued when hazardous weather becomes imminent or is already developing.

More Showers Possible Monday and Tuesday

Unsettled conditions are expected to continue into the beginning of the week.

Southern Durham has a 40 per cent chance of Monday afternoon showers and a thunderstorm, with a high of 28 C and humidex near 33. Northern Durham has a similar Monday forecast, followed by showers across the region Tuesday.

The current Durham July 26 weather forecast should be updated if Environment Canada changes the thunderstorm risk or issues an alert.

For Sunday, residents should prepare for warm and humid conditions followed by possible afternoon and evening thunderstorms, particularly across northern Durham.
