Fieldgate Sports Complex is officially open in Whitby following a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a full day of free community activities on Saturday, September 12.
The Town of Whitby scheduled the opening ceremony from 9:30 to 10 a.m. at the new facility, also known as 2 Gathering Place. Public activities then continued across the site until 4 p.m., giving residents a first-day look at its indoor and outdoor recreation spaces.
Olympic figure skating champion Elvis Stojko and professional skateboarder TJ Rogers joined the celebration. Stojko took part in the public-skating program, while Rogers appeared at the skate park for lessons, challenges and autographs.
Whitby Mayor Elizabeth Roy said thousands of residents and local sports and recreation organizations shared ideas that helped shape the complex. She described it as a facility built by the community to reflect Whitby’s growing needs.
Sports and recreation spaces open to residents
The opening-day schedule showed the range of spaces now available at the Fieldgate Sports Complex. Activities included public skating and minor-hockey scrimmages in two arenas, recreational swimming and a demonstration in the pool, and basketball, badminton and pickleball in the double gymnasium.
Outdoor areas hosted soccer, lacrosse, tennis, pickleball, netball and ball hockey. The site also includes a skate park, pump track, multi-use courts and a turf field. Inside, residents could visit a walking track, meeting rooms, a community room and a sensory space.
The family-focused program included dance and fitness sessions, West African drumming, crafts, music and food vendors. Visitors could also meet the project’s architect and learn about sustainability features incorporated into the complex.
Regular fall programs begin after opening day
The Town says its fall drop-in schedules will bring swimming, skating and gymnasium programs to the complex after the celebration. Ice rentals for the 2026-27 season become available beginning September 13, while the double gymnasium and community meeting spaces can be booked for activities and events.
The indoor walking track is scheduled to operate daily from 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. A membership or day pass is required outside the free opening-day program. The Town’s facility page lists current fees, schedules, safety rules and rental information.
The official opening is the latest milestone for the north Whitby recreation project. Parts of the complex had been used before the ceremony, including arena space made available for the Ontario Lacrosse Association Festival, but September 12 marked the formal public launch of the complete facility.
Residents planning to use the complex should check the Town’s online schedules before visiting because hours, program availability and registration requirements vary by activity.
