Drivers across Durham Region are being advised to plan ahead as numerous lane restrictions and construction-related closures are scheduled under the Durham highway closures May 9 roadwork update.
According to the latest provincial roadwork schedule, a total of 27 closures and lane restrictions will affect highways throughout Durham Region beginning May 9 and continuing through the coming days and weeks. The Durham highway closures May 9 advisory includes sections of Highway 401, Highway 412, Highway 407 ETR, Highway 35/115, Highway 35, Highway 12, and Highway 7/12.
Several of the most significant Durham highway closures May 9 impacts are expected along Highway 401 in Oshawa, Ajax, and Pickering. In Oshawa, nighttime lane closures are scheduled on Highway 401 westbound between Simcoe Street and Stevenson Road, with two right lanes closed overnight through May 15. Additional overnight closures are planned on Highway 401 eastbound near Harmony Road.
In Pickering, drivers will encounter nightly lane reductions between Brock Road and Whites Road, including closures affecting both collector and express lanes. Meanwhile, Ajax drivers should expect delays on Highway 401 westbound between Salem Road and Westney Road, where three right lanes will be closed overnight for roadwork.
Whitby motorists will also experience disruptions tied to the Durham highway closures May 9 schedule. Highway 412 northbound and southbound near Highway 401 and Highway 407 will have lane restrictions, including alternating ramp closures during nighttime construction hours.
Additional construction activity is taking place on Highway 407 ETR between Ajax and Oshawa, where left lane closures are scheduled in both directions beginning May 11. In Clarington, Highway 35/115 southbound between Highway 2 and Highway 401 will also see overnight lane closures through mid-May.
Northern Durham areas are included in the Durham highway closures May 9 update as well. In Scugog, lane closures are scheduled on Highway 7/12 between Highway 7A and Durham Road 13 near Sunderland. Long-term alternating lane restrictions continue on Highway 35 near Pontypool.
Transportation officials are reminding drivers to slow down in construction zones and remain alert for changing traffic patterns. Reduced speed limits are often in place during roadwork operations, and fines may increase in active construction areas.
The extensive Durham highway closures May 9 schedule reflects ongoing maintenance and infrastructure improvements across the region’s highway network. While temporary delays are expected, officials say the work is necessary to maintain roadway safety and improve traffic conditions long-term.
Commuters are encouraged to check traffic updates before travelling and allow extra time, especially during overnight and peak travel periods.
