A Pickering Highway 401 motorcycle crash killed a 22-year-old Scarborough man early Saturday after his motorcycle struck an electronic sign board inside a construction zone.
Ontario Provincial Police responded at approximately 2:25 a.m. on Aug. 15 to the westbound lanes of Highway 401 between Brock Road and Westney Road in Pickering.
The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.
Motorcycle Strikes Electronic Sign in Construction Zone
OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said the rider was travelling within the construction closure when the motorcycle struck an electronic sign board.
The impact ejected the rider from the motorcycle, causing fatal injuries.
Police said preliminary information indicates the motorcycle was reportedly travelling at a high rate of speed before the collision.
However, investigators have not determined exactly why the crash occurred, and the circumstances remain under investigation.
Highway 401 Reopened After Investigation
The westbound Highway 401 was closed around Westney Road for several hours while police investigated the fatal collision.
The highway has since reopened.
OPP is asking anyone who witnessed the collision or has relevant video footage to contact investigators.
The Pickering Highway 401 motorcycle crash remains under investigation, and police have not publicly released the rider’s name.
