Whitby Charity Update Highlights Mentoring and Fundraising

A Whitby charity update published November 1 highlights a year-end appeal for youth mentoring and a fundraising result from a local business’s opening celebrations.

The items appear in Mayor Elizabeth Roy’s monthly municipal newsletter. They concern different initiatives: support for mentoring through Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Durham, and money raised for Make-A-Wish Canada.

Holiday Spark appeal

The newsletter’s non-profit spotlight asks residents to support the Holiday Spark Campaign, which helps provide mentoring programmes and reach more local children and young people.

The Town describes one-to-one and group mentoring as opportunities for young people to build relationships with caring adults. Its account focuses on guidance, confidence and social connection rather than announcing a new clinical or school programme.

The appeal invites one-time and monthly donations. The November update does not give a local fundraising target, a closing date or a promised number of new mentoring matches. Those details should not be inferred from the campaign’s seasonal name.

Local opening fundraiser raises $3,293

The same Whitby charity update reports that the Jersey Mike’s Subs location at 80 Thickson Road South raised $3,293 for Make-A-Wish Canada through a 10-day fundraiser associated with its September 30 grand opening.

The result is reported in the newly released municipal newsletter; the restaurant opening itself is not being presented as a new November event.

According to the Town’s account, the Whitby activity forms part of the chain’s wider commitment to raise $1 million for Make-A-Wish Canada by 2030. That is a company-wide pledge, not money already raised by the Whitby location or a new municipal grant.

The newsletter does not announce another local collection date. Residents seeking current giving arrangements should consult the organisations directly rather than treating the completed opening fundraiser as an event still taking place.
