Residents across Durham Region and much of southern Ontario should prepare for another gloomy and damp spring day as cloudy skies and rain continue moving through the region on Sunday, May 24.
According to Environment Canada, the May 24 weather southern Ontario forecast calls for widespread overcast conditions, periods of rain, cooler temperatures, and lingering evening showers affecting communities throughout the Greater Toronto Area and surrounding regions.
The weather system is expected to impact areas including Durham Region, Toronto, Hamilton, Mississauga, Brampton, Halton, Niagara, and nearby municipalities as unstable spring conditions continue through the weekend.
Environment Canada says early morning sunshine will likely remain hidden behind heavy cloud cover as much of southern Ontario wakes up to grey skies and damp conditions.
In Durham Region, rain is forecast to continue through much of the afternoon before conditions remain cloudy into the evening hours. Temperatures are expected to reach approximately 18°C, making Durham slightly cooler compared to several western GTA communities.
The May 24 weather southern Ontario forecast predicts that Mississauga, Brampton, and Halton will experience periods of rain during the morning before showers gradually taper off later in the day. However, cloudy skies are expected to persist throughout the afternoon and evening.
Hamilton is also forecast to experience morning drizzle followed by overcast conditions for the remainder of the day. Temperatures there are expected to climb to approximately 22°C, with winds increasing to around 20 km/h later in the afternoon.
Humidity levels throughout southern Ontario may make temperatures feel warmer than actual air temperatures in some communities despite limited sunshine.
Weather officials say the UV index will remain moderate to high in several areas even with cloud cover present. Environment Canada continues encouraging residents spending time outdoors to wear sunscreen, sunglasses, and protective clothing to reduce UV exposure.
By Sunday evening, the May 24 weather southern Ontario system is expected to maintain cloudy conditions throughout the region with a 60 per cent chance of showers developing overnight.
Temperatures across Durham Region and the GTA are expected to settle near 13°C overnight.
The latest rainfall system arrives after several days of changing spring weather conditions across Ontario, including recent thunderstorms, heavy rainfall warnings, cooler overnight temperatures, and periods of humidity throughout the Victoria Day weekend.
Meteorologists say late May often brings unstable weather patterns to southern Ontario as cooler spring air clashes with warmer seasonal temperatures moving northward.
Rainy conditions may also impact outdoor activities, sporting events, weekend gatherings, and travel plans throughout Durham Region and surrounding municipalities.
Drivers are being encouraged to use caution during periods of heavier rain, particularly during early morning and evening travel hours when visibility may become reduced.
Environment Canada says weather conditions can shift quickly during spring systems, and residents should continue monitoring local forecasts for updated rainfall totals and changing conditions throughout the day.
Despite the rainy forecast, temperatures across southern Ontario continue trending warmer overall as the region gradually transitions toward summer weather patterns expected in the coming weeks.
Officials say additional showers and cloudy periods may continue into early next week before more stable conditions potentially return across portions of southern Ontario.
