Drivers travelling between Durham Region and Toronto are being advised to expect significant delays after a police investigation prompted multiple lane closures on Highway 401 in Scarborough.
Toronto Police reported a large police presence near Meadowvale Road and Highway 401 on Saturday, resulting in several traffic restrictions affecting one of the busiest transportation corridors in the Greater Toronto Area.
According to authorities, all westbound collector lanes of Highway 401 at Meadowvale Road have been closed as officers continue their investigation. The closure is expected to create heavy congestion for motorists heading westbound toward Toronto.
In addition to the collector lane closures, the westbound Highway 401 on-ramp from Port Union Road has also been shut down. Southbound Meadowvale Road at Highway 401 is experiencing lane restrictions as police maintain the investigation area.
Officials have not released details regarding the nature of the incident or what prompted the police response. As a result, motorists are being encouraged to avoid the area whenever possible and seek alternate routes.
The closures are particularly significant for Durham Region commuters travelling between communities such as Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa, and Toronto. Highway 401 serves as the primary transportation route connecting Durham Region to the rest of the Greater Toronto Area and routinely carries hundreds of thousands of vehicles daily.
Traffic delays began developing shortly after the closures were implemented, with congestion expected to continue while the investigation remains active. Drivers travelling westbound from Durham Region toward Toronto may experience longer-than-normal travel times throughout the afternoon and evening.
Police have not indicated when the affected lanes will reopen. Traffic conditions are expected to remain fluid as investigators continue their work and road access is reassessed.
Transportation officials recommend that motorists monitor traffic updates before beginning their journeys. Navigation apps and traffic services may provide real-time detour information and alternative routes to help reduce delays.
Residents travelling to Toronto Pearson Airport, downtown Toronto, or other GTA destinations are encouraged to allow additional travel time due to the disruption. Commercial traffic and transit services using the corridor may also be impacted.
While details surrounding the investigation remain limited, authorities stress that road closures are necessary to ensure public safety and allow officers to conduct their work effectively.
Further updates are expected once police provide additional information regarding the incident and any timeline for reopening the affected sections of Highway 401.
