The City of Oshawa is preparing for a major infrastructure overhaul as the Stevenson Road North upgrade moves forward, bringing comprehensive road reconstruction and infrastructure improvements to one of the city’s busiest north-south corridors.
The project will see a complete reconstruction of Stevenson Road North from Conlin Road to Taunton Road West, addressing growing traffic demands and aging infrastructure in one of Oshawa’s rapidly developing areas.
What the Stevenson Road North Upgrade Includes
According to the Region of Durham, the detailed design for the project encompasses a full road reconstruction along the corridor. The planned work includes new curb and gutter installation, a dedicated multi-use pathway on the east side of the roadway, intersection improvements, drainage upgrades, and comprehensive utility coordination.
The multi-use pathway represents a key active transportation improvement for the area, providing cyclists and pedestrians with a safe, dedicated route connecting neighbourhoods along the Stevenson Road North corridor.
Watermain and Sewer Infrastructure
Beyond the roadwork itself, the Region of Durham’s scope includes the design of new watermain and sanitary sewer infrastructure within the project limits. This critical underground work will support current and future development in the area.
The region is also planning to install a 900 mm concrete pressure pipe feedermain along Conlin Road, running from Stevenson Road to Walreg Drive. A portion of this feedermain work will extend onto Stevenson Road North, adding another layer of complexity to the coordination of the overall project.
Support from City and Regional Leadership
The Stevenson Road North upgrade has drawn attention from both municipal and regional leadership. Oshawa Mayor Dan Carter and Durham Regional Chair John Henry have both been highlighted in connection with the project, reflecting the significance of the infrastructure investment for the community.
The project forms part of a broader effort by the City of Oshawa and the Region of Durham to invest in critical road and utility infrastructure that supports residential growth and economic development in the northern reaches of the city.
What Residents Can Expect
As the project moves through the detailed design phase, residents and commuters in the area can expect further updates regarding construction timelines, traffic management plans, and potential detours. Major road reconstruction projects of this scope typically involve phased construction to minimize disruption while delivering long-term benefits.
The Stevenson Road North upgrade will ultimately deliver a safer, more efficient corridor for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians, while ensuring the underground infrastructure can meet the demands of Oshawa’s growing population for decades to come.
