Ontario consumers are being advised to check their refrigerators, freezers and cupboards after several food recalls were issued over concerns ranging from undeclared allergens to contamination and foreign material.
The latest Ontario food recalls include certain cheese products, vegetarian products, black sesame candy and chicken burgers. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has advised consumers not to use, serve, sell or distribute affected products and to check product labels, UPCs and codes carefully.
Cheese products recalled over generic E. coli
Several cheese products sold under the Bianca Murgia, Longo’s Curato and Sapori Coratini brands have been recalled in Ontario and Quebec because of generic E. coli.
Affected products include multiple sizes of Bianca Murgia Burratina Pugliese, Bianca Murgia Burratina Pugliese al Tartufo, Longo’s Curato Burrata Soft Fresh Cheese and Sapori Coratini Stracciatella.
The CFIA classifies the recall as Class 2. Consumers who have one of the affected products should not use, serve, sell or distribute it. The recall applies only to the specific sizes, UPCs and codes identified by the CFIA.
Vegetarian products recalled for undeclared wheat
Wu Xian Zhai Vegetarian Beef and Preserved Beancurd products are also included in the Ontario food recalls.
The affected 108-gram products include Vegetarian Beef in Five Spices Flavour and Numb & Spicy Flavour, along with Preserved Beancurd in Spices Beef Flavour and Pepper Beef Flavour. The recall applies to products where wheat is not declared on the label.
The undeclared allergen could pose a serious or potentially life-threatening risk to people with a wheat allergy or sensitivity. People with celiac disease or other gluten-related disorders are also advised not to consume the affected products.
The CFIA says the recall was triggered by test results and no reactions associated with the products had been reported when the notice was issued.
Stones found in black sesame candy
OneTang Walnut Soft Candy with Black Sesame has been recalled after stones were found in the product.
The affected package is 160 grams with UPC 6 954427 522321 and a best-before date of 2027/MAY/02. The product was distributed in Ontario and Manitoba.
The CFIA classified this as a Class 3 recall and advised consumers not to use, sell, serve or distribute the affected candy.
Chicken burgers recalled over undeclared egg
Cardinal Roadhouse Chicken Burgers are being recalled because egg is not declared on the label.
The affected product is an 852-gram package containing six 142-gram burgers, with UPC 0 63351 01567 3 and code 2026 NO 17. Distribution included Ontario, British Columbia and Newfoundland and Labrador.
People with an egg allergy or sensitivity should not eat the recalled burgers because exposure could cause a serious allergic reaction. The CFIA has classified the recall as Class 2.
Durham residents should check products carefully
The recalls were distributed in Ontario, making them relevant to consumers in Durham Region, although the federal notices do not identify specific Durham stores or municipalities.
Residents should compare products in their homes with the brand names, sizes, UPCs and codes listed in the official recall notices. Recalled food should not be consumed and should be discarded or returned as directed.
Consumers with food allergies should pay particular attention to the Wu Xian Zhai and Cardinal Roadhouse recalls because the affected labels do not declare wheat or egg.
The Ontario food recalls remain active consumer safety notices, and the CFIA may update recall information as food safety investigations continue.
