Aug. 23 update: Additional heavy rain possible
The Durham Region thunderstorms continued to create concerns on Sunday, Aug. 23, with Environment Canada warning that some communities could receive another 20 to 40 millimetres of rain.
An updated special weather statement for southern Durham Region said multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms were producing locally heavy rainfall. The additional rain was expected to continue through Sunday afternoon and could persist into the evening.
A similar weather statement was issued for northern Durham Region, including the Uxbridge and Beaverton area, where lake-effect showers moving off Lake Huron and Georgian Bay were contributing to locally heavy rainfall.
Environment Canada warned that water could pool on roads and in low-lying areas as the rainfall continued. Residents were also advised to watch for possible washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts.
Drivers should not attempt to travel through flooded roads because water depth and road conditions can be difficult to determine.
The latest warning follows Saturday’s unsettled weather, when Durham Region was already under a special weather statement for potentially significant rainfall and thunderstorms.
Because rainfall amounts can vary considerably over short distances, some Durham communities may receive much more rain than neighbouring areas.
Residents across Durham Region should continue monitoring official forecasts and weather alerts as conditions change.
