North Street lane restrictions will affect daytime travel in Newcastle from September 15 through December 31 while crews build a multi-use walkway and complete paving.
The work zone is on North Street, also known as Regional Road 17, from 200 metres north of Grady Drive to 370 metres south of Concession Road 3.
Restrictions apply during the day
Durham Region says the lane restrictions will be used only during daytime hours. The road is not described as a full closure, but drivers should allow additional time and follow signs or traffic-control personnel through the construction area.
Weather may affect the schedule. The December 31 end date is therefore an estimate based on suitable construction conditions.
Walkway supports nearby development
The project will construct a multi-use walkway and place surface asphalt in support of new development. A multi-use path is designed to accommodate more than one type of non-motorized travel, improving the corridor for pedestrians and cyclists as the area grows.
The Region acknowledges the work may be disruptive and says crews will try to complete it as efficiently as possible.
Drivers asked to use caution
Motorists should reduce speed and watch for workers, pedestrians, cyclists, temporary barriers and changing lane alignments. Work zones can change as construction progresses, even when the overall limits remain the same.
Residents can use Durham Region’s Traffic Watch map for current road information before travelling. Any full closure or major schedule extension would require a separate update from the Region.
The restrictions begin September 15 and are scheduled to continue during daytime hours until December 31 on North Street between the points north of Grady Drive and south of Concession Road 3.
