Creative residents looking to explore a unique jewellery-making technique will have the opportunity to learn the art of torch-fired enameling during a hands-on workshop at META4 Gallery in Port Perry.
The “Intro to Torch” workshop is scheduled for June 6 and will introduce participants to the colourful world of enamel jewellery design. Hosted at META4 Gallery, located at 200 Queen Street in Port Perry, the full-day class is designed for beginners, hobbyists, and makers interested in expanding their creative skills.
Led by instructor Shannon Kennedy, the workshop provides a practical introduction to enameling, a decorative technique that involves fusing powdered glass onto metal surfaces using heat. Participants will learn how to apply vibrant enamel colours to copper using a torch while exploring a variety of techniques that create unique textures and finishes.
Throughout the day, attendees will gain hands-on experience with colour layering, sifting methods, and special surface effects that are commonly used in contemporary enamel jewellery design. The workshop begins with practice pieces that allow participants to build confidence and become familiar with the process before progressing to finished projects.
By the end of the session, participants are expected to create wearable jewellery pieces, including a pair of enamel earrings and, time permitting, a pendant. Finished pieces will be completed using sterling silver findings, allowing attendees to leave with professional-quality handmade accessories ready to wear or give as gifts.
Organizers say the workshop is ideal for anyone curious about working with metal, colour, and flame. No prior enameling experience is required, making the course accessible to complete beginners as well as artists interested in adding a new technique to their creative toolkit.
One of the advantages of the program is its small class size, which allows for individualized instruction and support throughout the learning process. Participants will receive guidance on safety procedures, tool usage, and design techniques while working on their projects.
Enameling has experienced growing popularity among jewellery artists and craft enthusiasts due to its ability to create vibrant, durable colours that become permanently fused to metal surfaces. The process combines artistic creativity with technical skill, resulting in distinctive handcrafted pieces that showcase personal expression.
The workshop also highlights the growing arts community within Scugog and Port Perry. Creative programs hosted by local galleries and cultural organizations continue to provide opportunities for residents to learn new skills, connect with fellow artists, and participate in hands-on cultural experiences.
All essential materials will be provided through the workshop’s materials package, including copper blanks, enamel powders, and sterling silver findings. Participants will have access to the tools and equipment needed to complete their projects during the session.
As interest in artisan crafts continues to grow, workshops such as Intro to Torch offer valuable opportunities for community members to explore traditional techniques while creating unique handmade items.
Residents interested in learning the art of enameling can register for the June 6 workshop and experience a day of creativity, craftsmanship, and artistic discovery in the heart of Port Perry.
