Toronto police have arrested a man following a disturbing incident in which he allegedly attempted to set people’s clothing on fire at a busy transit and shopping location.
Police say the incident began Sunday morning at Kennedy Subway Station, where the suspect allegedly tried to ignite a person’s jacket while they were standing on the subway platform. A public safety alert was later issued as officers worked to locate the suspect.
The situation escalated on Monday around 6:30 a.m., when officers were called to Scarborough Town Centre. Investigators say a victim had left their jacket on a chair inside the mall, and the suspect set it on fire before walking away. He is also accused of attempting to light another person’s clothing on fire outside one of the mall entrances.
Donald McFarlane, 47, of Toronto, was arrested and charged with multiple offences, including:
- Assault with a weapon
- Arson / damage to property
- Two counts of common nuisance
- Causing a disturbance
- Four counts of failing to comply with probation
