Lakeshore East weekend GO trains will move to a 30-minute schedule beginning Saturday, September 5, affecting riders in Oshawa, Whitby, Ajax and Pickering.

Metrolinx says the adjustment is part of a broader set of rail and bus changes intended to align service with seasonal demand and address train-crew availability. Rush-hour service will remain unchanged on all affected lines.

Weekend frequency changes Sept. 5

The change means weekend passengers on the Lakeshore East line should plan for trains every 30 minutes rather than the 15-minute midday and evening frequency restored in May. Riders should check the trip planner before leaving, particularly when making connections at Union Station or transferring to local transit.

The Lakeshore East corridor serves Durham College Oshawa GO, Whitby GO, Ajax GO and Pickering GO before continuing west toward Toronto. A less frequent weekend schedule can add waiting time when a connection is missed, even when the train trip itself is unchanged.

Metrolinx calls changes interim

Metrolinx says the broader service measures are expected to continue until spring 2027. The agency cited crew training and certification, recovery from high ridership demands during FIFA events and the need to build capacity for future service.

Other lines will see some rail trips replaced with buses, while GO bus schedules across the network are also being adjusted. Metrolinx says increased seasonal post-secondary bus service is part of the same change package.

What Durham riders should do

Passengers travelling on weekends should confirm departure times in the GO Transit schedule or trip planner after September 5. Platform information and trip times can change, so riders should also check station displays before boarding.

The announcement represents a major change from the 15-minute weekend service that returned earlier this year. Metrolinx says it will monitor staffing and ridership and provide notice of future schedule adjustments when possible.
