The Regional Municipality of Durham is inviting local residents to participate in an upcoming community gathering designed to highlight the essential services provided by the Works Department. Scheduled to coincide with National Public Works Week, the educational event will take place on Saturday, May 23, offering residents an opportunity to engage with regional infrastructure operations firsthand. The free open house will be held at the Oshawa/Whitby Depot, located at 825 Conlin Road in Whitby, running from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. regardless of weather conditions.

National Public Works Week serves as an annual acknowledgement of the critical contributions made by public works professionals to the health, safety, and quality of life in communities across the country. By opening the doors of the facility, the Region aims to foster a greater understanding among citizens regarding the complexities involved in maintaining municipal infrastructure. This year’s celebration will provide a behind-the-scenes look at the various divisions that keep the Region of Durham moving, including road maintenance, water services, and waste management.

Attendees can expect a diverse range of interactive displays and activities tailored for family members of all ages. The agenda features guided tours of the depot, allowing visitors to see the heavy machinery and fleet vehicles used for daily operations up close. In an effort to provide an immersive experience, the Works Department has arranged for a heavy equipment simulator. This technology gives participants a virtual glimpse into the operator’s seat, demonstrating the skill required to manage the Region’s large-scale construction and maintenance equipment.

One of the perennial favourites of the gathering, the Touch-a-Truck exhibit, will return, giving children the chance to explore large vehicles in a safe and supervised environment. Alongside the mechanical displays, staff from various divisions will be manning information booths to answer questions and distribute educational materials. These stations are intended to clarify the processes behind road repairs, seasonal maintenance, and the planning that goes into the Region’s extensive transportation network.

Organizers have introduced new attractions to this year’s itinerary to enhance the community atmosphere. In addition to the educational components, the event will feature face painting for younger attendees and an on-site ice cream truck offering refreshments. These additions are designed to create a festive environment that encourages families to spend the day learning about the municipality while enjoying local amenities.

The Works Department plays a pivotal role in the daily lives of Durham’s residents, overseeing everything from traffic light operations to snow and ice control on regional roads. The event serves as a platform for the municipality to showcase the breadth of these responsibilities, which directly impact the growth and sustainability of communities such as Oshawa, Whitby, Pickering, and Clarington. By demystifying these operations, the Region hopes to strengthen the relationship between the public service and the citizens it serves.

Located at a central hub on Conlin Road, the Oshawa/Whitby Depot acts as a key operational centre for the department. Access to the site will be open to the public during the specified hours, with parking available on-site for attendees. Residents interested in infrastructure, urban planning, or simply looking for a family-friendly outing are encouraged to attend this informative session.

As the Region continues to grow and develop its infrastructure, events like this highlight the ongoing commitment to transparency and community engagement. Residents looking for more information on the event or the services provided by the Works Department can visit the Region’s official website or contact customer service.
