Drivers travelling through Durham Region on Friday, Aug. 28 should prepare for numerous overnight lane and ramp restrictions as roadwork continues on several major provincial highways.

The latest Durham highway roadwork schedule includes work on Highway 401 through Pickering, Ajax, Oshawa and Clarington, along with restrictions on Highway 407 and several routes serving northern Durham.

Most of the work involves temporary lane restrictions rather than complete highway closures, and many projects are scheduled during overnight hours to reduce disruption to daytime traffic.

Highway 401 roadwork in Oshawa

Oshawa has several Highway 401 work zones affecting traffic around Simcoe Street, Ritson Road and Harmony Road.

An ongoing eastbound restriction between Simcoe Street and Ritson Road is scheduled to continue until Aug. 31.

Additional eastbound work around Ritson and Harmony roads is also scheduled Friday night, including two alternating lane restrictions beginning around 10 p.m. Aug. 28 and continuing into Saturday morning.

Westbound motorists should also expect overnight restrictions between Harmony Road and Ritson Road, with another work period beginning around 9 p.m. Friday.

Drivers travelling farther east should be aware of continuing work between Harmony Road in Oshawa and Boundary Road near Port Hope.

Ajax and Pickering face Highway 401 restrictions

Several of Friday’s most significant Durham highway roadwork entries are in Ajax and Pickering.

Eastbound Highway 401 between Brock Road in Pickering and Harwood Avenue in Ajax has an alternating lane restriction scheduled during overnight periods through Sept. 1.

Westbound restrictions are also continuing between Salem Road in Ajax and Brock Road in Pickering, as well as between Brock Road and Whites Road.

Motorists using Brock Road should take additional care Friday night.

Both eastbound and westbound Highway 401 off-ramps at Brock Road have left-lane restrictions scheduled to begin at approximately 9:30 p.m. Aug. 28 and continue during overnight work periods through Aug. 31.

Another westbound restriction is scheduled between Liverpool Road and Whites Road in Pickering.

Clarington highways also affected

Drivers in Clarington will encounter work on Highway 401, Highway 35/115 and Highway 407.

Westbound Highway 401 between Boundary Road and Harmony Road remains subject to an alternating lane restriction as part of work scheduled through early September.

Highway 35/115 also has overnight restrictions in both directions near Highway 401.

The southbound restriction is scheduled through Aug. 29, while work affecting the northbound side was scheduled to continue into Friday morning.

Highway 407 roadwork is also taking place in parts of Clarington, including sections near Bowmanville Avenue, Darlington-Clarke Townline and Enfield Road.

North Durham roadwork continues

Drivers travelling through Whitby, Brock Township, Port Perry and other parts of northern Durham should also allow additional travel time.

Ongoing work is listed along portions of Highway 7, Highway 7/12 and Highway 12, with several restrictions continuing through Sept. 4.

Highway 7A eastbound between Highway 7/12 and Nesbitt Line Road in the Port Perry area is also subject to an overnight right-lane restriction.

Highway 48 and other routes near the northern edge of Durham are affected by additional scheduled roadwork.

Check conditions before leaving

Roadwork schedules can change because of weather, construction progress or operational requirements.

Ontario 511 provides current information about roadwork, incidents, traffic conditions and highway closures and advises drivers to check conditions before travelling.

Motorists travelling through active work zones should reduce speed, watch for workers and equipment, obey temporary signs and leave additional space between vehicles.

With projects spread across Highway 401 and several other major routes, drivers travelling through Durham Region Friday evening and overnight should allow extra time and check the latest highway information before departing.
