Durham College RITS is a new single point of contact for organizations seeking the college’s applied research, workforce training and co-operative education expertise.
Durham College announced the Research, Innovation and Training Services unit on September 21. The change brings its applied research, institutional research, co-op and corporate training teams together under one name.
Five research centres join corporate training expertise
The college said RITS combines Corporate Training Services’ business development and relationship-management work with the technical expertise and research capacity of five research centres.
The integrated structure is intended to make it easier for industry and community partners to connect with the college. Instead of approaching separate teams for research, training or student talent, organizations can use RITS as a common entry point.
Durham College identified artificial intelligence, immersive simulations, defence, nuclear technology and energy as priority areas for new partnerships. The unit will use college expertise and facilities to help organizations address practical challenges while contributing to regional economic and community development.
Students and employees are part of the model
RITS is also designed to create learning opportunities for Durham College students and employees. Applied projects and co-op relationships can connect classroom learning with work carried out for businesses, public institutions and community organizations.
The college has not announced new buildings, programs or staffing changes as part of the reorganization. Its September statement describes RITS as an integrated service model and a new public identity for work already spread across several college teams.
Durham College operates campuses in Oshawa and Whitby. Organizations interested in applied research, training or partnership opportunities can review the new RITS service page linked from the college’s announcement.
The reorganization follows the college’s continuing focus on workforce development and industry partnerships. The announcement did not set application deadlines or limit participation to one sector.
