Durham 911 service has been restored after an intermittent outage affected emergency lines early Thursday morning, September 17.

Durham Regional Police was among several police services that alerted residents to disruptions reported across Ontario. Local reports say Durham, York and Peel police posted warnings between about 4:30 and 5:30 a.m.

Service restored after early-morning disruption

Police later advised that 911 service had returned. The interruption was not confined to Durham: emergency agencies in several parts of Ontario and elsewhere in Canada reported similar problems Thursday morning.

National coverage described the outages as intermittent and said service was restored within an hour or two in many affected communities. Some agencies reported that restoration was gradual as systems came back online.

The available reports did not establish a detailed local cause. Residents should avoid speculating about the source until authorities or service providers release confirmed technical findings.

What residents should know

With local 911 service restored, people experiencing an immediate threat to life or safety should use 911 in the normal way. Non-emergency matters should continue to be directed to the appropriate service rather than the emergency line.

Anyone who tried to call during the disruption and still needs emergency help should call again. Public safety agencies may issue updated instructions if another service problem develops.

The incident is a reminder to monitor official police and municipal channels during a telecommunications disruption. Alternate contact instructions can vary by community and should come from the responsible emergency agency.
