A driver suffered life-threatening injuries in a Courtice Highway 401 crash involving a passenger vehicle and a transport truck stopped on the shoulder Thursday afternoon.
Ontario Provincial Police are appealing for witnesses and dash-camera video after the collision, which happened in the westbound lanes at about 3:50 p.m. on September 3.
Passenger vehicle struck stopped transport
Police said the passenger vehicle hit the rear of the transport truck. The truck had pulled onto the highway shoulder and was waiting for repairs when the collision occurred.
The passenger vehicle’s driver was taken to hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries. A passenger in the same vehicle suffered serious injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
The transport-truck driver was not injured, according to the information released by police.
OPP ask witnesses to come forward
Investigators are asking anyone who saw the collision or recorded the area on a dash camera to contact the OPP’s Whitby detachment at 905-668-3388. Callers should reference incident number E261277693.
Video recorded shortly before or after a crash can help investigators establish vehicle movements, traffic conditions and the sequence of events, even when the collision itself is not visible.
Investigation remains active
Police had not publicly identified the injured occupants or announced a cause when the appeal was issued. No charge was reported, and the known facts should not be interpreted as assigning responsibility for the collision.
The incident happened in Courtice, within the Municipality of Clarington. Highway 401 traffic can move quickly through the area, and drivers approaching a stopped vehicle or emergency response should reduce speed, leave additional space and follow police or road-crew directions.
