The inaugural Bowmanville hospital walk raised more than $88,000 for the planned redevelopment of Lakeridge Health Bowmanville Hospital.
More than 300 participants and volunteers took part in Steps for Care on Sunday, September 27, along the Darlington Waterfront Trail in Courtice. The result exceeded the Bowmanville Hospital Foundation’s $50,000 goal by more than 75 per cent.
Donations remain open
The foundation said peer-to-peer donations passed $63,000, including a $12,500 matching contribution from TD. Event sponsors supplied additional support. Donations remain open until October 31.
The five-kilometre walk included a family activity area, inflatables, a barbecue lunch and ice cream. It was held during the foundation’s 50th anniversary year.
Hospital redevelopment
Funds support the We Care, We Can campaign. Plans call for the hospital to nearly double in size and add expanded ambulatory clinics, haemodialysis services, Level 3 critical-care capacity and a rooftop helipad.
The final total is a substantial update to earlier coverage of the Bowmanville hospital walk, which had passed $20,000 before the event.
