An emotional chapter has come to a close in Durham Region as residents gathered for a final skate at the historic Luther Vipond Memorial Arena in Brooklin, marking the end of ice sports at the beloved community facility. The event brought together families, athletes and long-time residents to celebrate decades of memories inside one of Whitby’s most iconic arenas.

Located in Brooklin, part of Whitby in Durham Region, the arena officially closed for the ice season on Monday, with Sunday’s farewell skate drawing a strong turnout from the community. Participants were encouraged to bring a small donation, with proceeds going to Lakeridge Health to support the development of a future hospital in Whitby, adding a meaningful cause to the final event.

The Luther Vipond Memorial Arena has long been more than just a rink. Since opening in 1973, it has served as a central hub for recreation, local sports and major community events such as the Brooklin Spring Fair. Generations of residents have passed through its doors, building lasting memories through hockey games, skating lessons and community gatherings.

The arena is named after Luther Vipond, a D-Day veteran and lacrosse legend who played a major role in the development of local sports in the area. His legacy runs deep within the community, as he contributed to numerous championship teams and served in various roles including player, coach, manager and arena operator. His vision was to create a space where people could come together, and for decades, the arena fulfilled that purpose.

Now, as Durham Region continues to grow, ice sports are transitioning to the new Fieldgate Sports Complex, a modern facility expected to better meet the needs of the expanding community. The new complex will feature updated amenities and additional ice pads, providing improved opportunities for athletes and recreational users alike.

While the move marks progress, it also brings questions about the future of the historic arena. A recent community engagement process saw more than 1,300 residents participate in surveys, along with additional in-person and virtual sessions. Feedback focused on potential new uses for the space, including indoor recreation, community programming and event hosting.

Despite the changes, one thing remains certain: the legacy of Luther Vipond and the arena that bears his name will continue to be honoured. Community members and the Vipond family have emphasized the importance of preserving the spirit of the space, even as its purpose evolves.

The grounds will still host traditional events like the Brooklin Spring Fair, ensuring that the site remains an important part of community life in Durham Region.

For many residents, the final skate was not just the end of a season, but the closing of a meaningful chapter. As the doors transition to a new future, the memories created inside the arena will remain a lasting part of Durham Region’s history.
