Durham Police are warning the public about a troubling rise in counterfeit currency fraud in Durham Region, with incidents increasing by 121% over the past year. This surge in fraudulent activity is being seen nationwide, with victims primarily targeted during online sales on platforms like Facebook Marketplace or Kijiji.
High-end items such as laptops, cell phones, and jewelry are being bought, and in return, sellers are being handed large amounts of counterfeit currency. The suspects, often using fake social media accounts, complete the transaction and block the victims afterward.
Police caution the public to exercise extra care when engaging in online buy/sell transactions with strangers. It’s crucial to record user profile information, including account names and other available details. Always verify the legitimacy of bills received during these exchanges.
