Ontario Power Generation (OPG) has officially signed a deal with Port Hope to build a nuclear reactor. This groundbreaking agreement is set to create 1,700 jobs locally in the town of Port Hope and over 10,000 jobs across the province. The OPG signs deal Port Hope nuclear reactor project is part of a larger plan to increase Ontario’s nuclear capacity, which would power up to 10 million homes.
Energy Minister Stephen Lecce emphasized that this deal with Port Hope is a crucial step toward realizing the world’s largest nuclear energy plant. OPG’s submission of the initial project description to the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada on January 12, 2026, is also an essential milestone.
Port Hope Mayor Olena Hankivsky expressed that the deal would foster long-term economic growth in the region. The OPG has also recently completed a refurbishment project at the Darlington Nuclear Station, costing $12.8 billion, and is pursuing further projects, including small modular reactors at Bruce Power.
