A Durham police drone rescue played a critical role in saving a suspect who was at serious risk of freezing during extreme cold conditions, according to Durham Regional Police.
Police said the incident occurred when a suspect fled from officers while outdoors in freezing temperatures and was wearing clothing that placed him at significant risk of cold exposure.
With time working against responders, the Durham Regional Police Service Drone Unit was deployed to search challenging terrain that would have been difficult and dangerous for officers to cover on foot.
The drone operator quickly located the individual and guided Tactical Support Unit and K9 officers directly to the suspect’s location. Police said the coordination allowed officers to reach the individual before the situation became life-threatening.
The suspect was safely taken into custody and immediately transferred to an awaiting ambulance for life-saving medical treatment.
Durham police credited training, teamwork, and technology for the successful outcome, noting that the Durham police drone rescue highlights how modern policing tools can help protect lives, even in high-risk situations.
No further details were released by police.
