A new Food Basics Whitby location opened on October 8 as the discount grocer expanded its Ontario network.
Canadian Grocer reported that Food Basics opened stores in Whitby and the North York area of Toronto on the same day. The two openings bring the Metro-owned chain to 160 stores.
Whitby store is about 33,000 square feet
The new Whitby grocery store covers approximately 33,000 square feet. It offers fresh meat and produce, fresh barbecue chicken, private-label products and locally sourced items.
Food Basics described both new locations as contemporary stores with selections intended to reflect the diversity of their Southern Ontario communities.
The company did not identify the Whitby store address or opening hours in the report. Shoppers should confirm current details through the retailer before travelling.
Donation planned for local food charity
Food Basics said it will donate $5,000 to a food charity in each of the two markets. The Whitby recipient was not named in the announcement summarized by Canadian Grocer.
John Manax, Food Basics vice-president of operations, said the company was adding ways for Whitby and North York residents to save on grocery products.
The Food Basics Whitby opening adds another discount-grocery option in the municipality. The North York store also includes a pharmacy, but the report did not say that the Whitby location has one.
