Oshawa’s 1926 Information Network: An October 5 Archive Snapshot

Durham Time Machine — October 5, 1926 ↔ October 5, 2026

October 5, 1926 was a Tuesday. This is a sourced reconstruction / archive snapshot, not a report of a newspaper deadline, a radio broadcast, a telegram, a telephone call or a business decision that happened on that date. The exact-year Oshawa Daily Reformer newspaper run could not be opened normally: Durham Region Newspapers returned an access-control challenge, and it was not bypassed. This edition instead uses the City of Oshawa Directory, published May 1, 1926 and digitized by Oshawa Public Libraries.

That distinction matters. An annual directory can establish what its compilers listed in Oshawa during 1926. It cannot establish what anyone heard, read, sent or received on October 5. The book nevertheless offers a useful map of information infrastructure: a local daily paper, commercial printers, a telephone company, two telegraph counters, radio retailers and news agents all appear within its listings.

A daily paper on Simcoe Street

The directory’s classified pages listed the Ontario Reformer at 57 Simcoe Street South. Its alphabetical listings identify the Daily Reformer as a newspaper at the same address and name Charles M. Mundy as president and A. R. Alloway as secretary-treasurer. A separate business entry described Mundy Printing Co. Ltd. as publisher of the Daily Reformer, also at 57 Simcoe South.

Those entries document a published local address and the directory’s named officers; they do not establish the paper’s ownership history in a legal sense, its editorial position, circulation, edition time, staff roster or the contents of a Tuesday issue. The Oshawa Museum’s account of local newspapers provides broader context: it says the Reformer became the Oshawa Daily Times in 1927. That later change is context, not evidence of a specific event in October 1926.

More than one way to send a message

The directory located Bell Telephone Co. of Canada at 15 Victoria Street and named H. M. Black as district manager. Its classified listings placed Canadian National Telegraph at 3 King Street East, while C.P.R. Tickets & Telegraph appeared at 11½ King Street East. For an Oshawa resident or business, the book therefore presented telephone and telegraph services as specific downtown destinations rather than abstract technologies.

It would be wrong to convert these listings into a claim about access or use. The directory does not give exchange capacity, call charges, telegram volumes, opening hours, service territory or the experience of people who could not afford a connection. It also does not show that either telegraph office handled a message on October 5. What it does show is how the city’s business directory placed several communications services within a short stretch of the downtown street grid.

Radio was already a retail category

Radio appears as its own classified heading in the 1926 directory. Six businesses were listed: D. J. Brown at 10 King Street West; Dignam & Mason at the corner of King Street West and Centre Street; Johns Piano Store at 80 Simcoe Street North; Luke Furniture Co. at 63 King Street East; Donald D. McKay at 37 King Street West; and Radio Sales at 11 Church Street. This is firm evidence that the directory’s compilers treated radio sets as a recognizable local retail category.

It is not evidence that each business stocked the same receiver, offered repairs, had the same hours or made a sale that day. Nor does a dealer listing prove which stations Oshawa households could receive, who listened, or what programming they heard. The important historical point is more limited: the directory put radio alongside other ordinary commercial headings, a sign that the technology had entered the city’s printed consumer map.

Paper, print and the route to a reader

Information still depended on physical distribution. The directory listed news agents M. Bouckley at 22 King Street West and A. M. Germond at 8 King Street West. It also listed printers including Alger Press at 35 King Street East, Mundy Printing Co. at 57 Simcoe Street South and W. H. Wigg at 61 King Street West. These businesses should not be assumed to have had identical roles: a directory category identifies a listing, not a complete description of contracts, customers or production.

Together, the entries complicate a simple story in which one new technology replaced another. In the directory’s Oshawa, a daily newspaper and printers occupied Simcoe and King streets; telegraph and telephone offices were separately named; and radio sellers were dispersed around the commercial core. The source presents an overlapping system of printed news, wired messages, voice calls and home receivers.

What this archive snapshot establishes—and what it cannot

At least five bounded local facts are verified in the 1926 directory: the Daily Reformer was listed at 57 Simcoe Street South; the directory named Mundy and Alloway in connection with it; Bell Telephone was listed at 15 Victoria Street; Canadian National Telegraph and C.P.R. Tickets & Telegraph were listed at 3 and 11½ King Street East; six radio sellers were listed under a dedicated heading; and two news agents and several printers were named downtown. The source establishes listings, addresses and its own categories.

It cannot prove a headline, broadcast, telephone conversation, telegram, circulation number, sale or public reaction on October 5, 1926. It also cannot establish modern occupancy of every address. This is not a reconstructed day in Oshawa’s media life. It is a source-aware snapshot of the places and businesses a 1926 directory directed readers to when news or communication mattered.

Sources and method

  • 1926 City of Oshawa Directory, Henry Vernon & Son, published May 1, 1926; classified headings “Newspapers,” “Publishers,” “Radios,” “Telegraph Co’s” and “Telephone Co,” plus alphabetical business listings. Digitized by Oshawa Public Libraries. Facts are reported in original wording; no scan, photograph, advertisement, source headline or protected passage is reproduced.
  • Oshawa Public Libraries — Oshawa City Directories.
  • Oshawa Museum — Oshawa’s newspapers, past and present, for later newspaper-history context only.
  • Durham Region Newspapers / VITA, checked for date-specific research; access control was not bypassed.

Source note: This is original editorial work and a sourced reconstruction of Oshawa’s 1926 communications listings. The annual directory was published May 1 and cannot establish an event, message, broadcast, sale or editorial decision on October 5. Directory listings are reported as listings; the museum’s 1927 name-change reference is used only for broader context. No archive scan, photograph, advertisement, source headline or protected wording has been reproduced.
