The Oshawa Athol Street closure will begin Monday, August 10, affecting a section of the downtown road between Centre Street North and Simcoe Street North.
The City of Oshawa says the closure is scheduled to remain in place until September 18, 2026.
Drivers will not be able to travel through the affected stretch while construction crews complete service connections for a new residential development at 39 Athol Street West.
Oshawa Athol Street Closure Lasts Until September 18
The hard road closure will be located in front of 39 Athol Street West.
According to the city, the work is required to support construction of a new 205-unit residential building at the property.
Road closure and detour signs will be installed in accordance with provincial standards to direct motorists around the construction area.
Drivers travelling through downtown Oshawa should plan alternate routes and allow additional travel time while the closure remains in effect.
Local Parking Access Will Remain Available
Although through traffic will not be permitted, some local access will remain available.
Drivers will be able to enter from Simcoe Street to reach:
- Municipal Parking Lot 4
- The Michael Starr Building parking garage
The city says the road will otherwise be completely closed at the construction site.
There will also be no through access for emergency vehicles.
Motorists should follow posted signs and avoid entering the construction zone unless they are accessing the available parking facilities.
Closure Supports 205-Unit Residential Development
The work is connected to construction of a 205-unit residential development at 39 Athol Street West.
Service connections must be completed beneath or alongside the roadway before development work can proceed.
The closure is currently scheduled from August 10 through September 18, although construction schedules can change because of weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
