Public Safety Headlines

Durham Regional Police announced several significant investigations and arrests throughout the week.

A 50-year-old Pickering woman was charged in connection with an alleged counterfeit cash scheme involving HomeSense stores in Ajax and Pickering. Investigators allege counterfeit bills were used to purchase merchandise before the items were returned for legitimate cash refunds.

Police also continue searching for a suspect following a violent attempted robbery in Ajax, where a man was seriously assaulted during an attempt to steal his shoes.

In another case, officers arrested a 35-year-old Pickering man accused of stealing more than $45,000 worth of scrap metal from an Ajax recycling facility.

Meanwhile, a downtown Oshawa knife incident resulted in the arrest of a 41-year-old Oshawa man, while a commercial vehicle enforcement operation in Bowmanville led to 18 charges after a cargo van was allegedly clocked travelling 156 km/h.

Local Government Updates

Preparations continue for the 2026 Pickering Municipal Election, with candidates including incumbent Mayor Kevin Ashe and Councillor Lisa Robinson seeking the city’s top office. Nominations remain open until August 21, while online voting begins on October 19.

The Ontario government also announced a new $250,000 rebate program that will help nearly 400 Royal Canadian Legion branches cover liquor licence fees over the next five years.

In Bowmanville, local residents, community leaders, and elected officials gathered at a packed public meeting to stand against hate and support a family targeted by harassment.

Development and Community News

Durham Region temporarily suspended the acceptance of used tires at several waste management facilities because of a province-wide recycling backlog, asking residents to hold onto tires until the service resumes.

Drivers also saw fuel prices increase by approximately four cents per litre across the Greater Toronto Area as higher crude oil prices and seasonal demand pushed costs upward.

In Ajax, Town Brewery officially opened its new Paradise Beach Bar at Paradise Park as part of a seasonal pilot project designed to evaluate alcohol service within public parks.

Education news also made headlines as Trent University and OPSEU Local 365 reached a tentative collective agreement covering more than 520 support staff at the Peterborough and Oshawa campuses.

Arts & Culture

The roundup concludes with news that the acclaimed Canadian musical DANCER will return to Toronto this October, celebrating the extraordinary story of Northern Dancer, the legendary racehorse born at Oshawa’s historic Windfields Farm.
