Two new Oshawa restaurants expand South Asian food scene

Oshawa’s restaurant scene has added two new South Asian dining options, bringing vegetarian South Indian dishes and halal Pakistani favourites to different parts of the city.

The latest Oshawa restaurants include Aaha Truly South on Simcoe Street North and Silver Spoon on Taunton Road West.

Both businesses are expanding existing Greater Toronto Area restaurant brands into Durham Region, giving local diners additional options for dosa, idli, biryani, curries, kebabs and other South Asian dishes.

Aaha Truly South opens in north Oshawa

Aaha Truly South has opened at 1180 Simcoe St. N. in Oshawa.

The vegetarian South Indian restaurant marked its Oshawa grand opening in August, becoming the company’s third location after restaurants in Scarborough and downtown Toronto.

Its menu focuses on traditional South Indian vegetarian dishes.

Customers can find several varieties of idli, the steamed rice-and-lentil cakes commonly served with chutney or sambar, along with vada, dosa, pesarattu, pongal and other dishes.

Dosas range from simpler versions to masala and other specialty options, while pesarattu offers a green-gram-based alternative.

The restaurant also serves South Indian filter coffee and a selection of desserts.

The addition gives north Oshawa another restaurant specializing specifically in vegetarian Indian cuisine rather than offering meat-free dishes only as part of a larger menu.

Silver Spoon expands to Oshawa

Silver Spoon has also recently expanded into Oshawa with a location at 452 Taunton Rd. W., Unit 9.

The family-run restaurant and catering company has been serving halal Pakistani food in the Greater Toronto Area since 2000.

Its Oshawa menu includes biryani, curries, barbecue dishes, kebabs, naan and vegetarian selections.

Customers can also find breakfast items and desserts, while catering remains an important part of the business.

The Oshawa restaurant joins Silver Spoon locations elsewhere in the GTA, including Pickering, giving the company another presence in Durham Region.

Silver Spoon’s move into Oshawa also adds another halal dining option to the busy Taunton Road commercial corridor.

New restaurants add more variety to Oshawa

The two openings highlight the growing range of South Asian food available across Oshawa.

Aaha Truly South is focused on meat-free South Indian cooking, with dishes such as dosa, idli and pesarattu playing prominent roles on the menu.

Silver Spoon takes a different approach, concentrating primarily on Pakistani cuisine, including biryani, curries, grilled meats and catering-style dishes.

That means the two restaurants serve different parts of the broader South Asian food market rather than offering identical menus.

Both are also located in north Oshawa, where continued residential and commercial growth has brought more restaurants and services to major roads including Simcoe Street North and Taunton Road.

Oshawa diners have two more choices

Restaurant openings can change quickly, particularly when businesses are still settling into new locations, so customers should confirm current operating hours before visiting.

Aaha Truly South is located at 1180 Simcoe St. N., while Silver Spoon is at 452 Taunton Rd. W., Unit 9.

The latest Oshawa restaurants add two distinct options for local diners — one centred on vegetarian South Indian cooking and the other on halal Pakistani favourites.

Together, the openings continue the expansion of Oshawa’s increasingly diverse restaurant scene and bring two established GTA food concepts farther east into Durham Region.
