A southern Ontario weather alert is in effect as hazardous winter conditions move across the province, bringing snowfall warnings and extreme cold advisories through Sunday and Monday.
Environment and Climate Change Canada says areas including Durham Region, Mississauga, Brampton, Halton, Hamilton, Niagara, and Toronto are under yellow-level winter storm and snowfall warnings. Snow is expected to begin Sunday afternoon and continue into Monday morning, with 15 to 25 centimetres possible in some locations.
In Durham Region, communities including Oshawa, Pickering, Whitby, Ajax, and Clarington are expected to experience challenging travel conditions as snow and Arctic air move through the area.
The weather agency also warns of dangerous wind chills, with temperatures feeling as cold as minus 30 to minus 35, and even colder in northern regions. Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin.
Officials caution that extreme cold poses a serious risk to everyone, particularly young children, seniors, and those without adequate shelter. Residents are urged to dress in warm layers, limit outdoor exposure, and monitor Environment Canada forecasts and alerts as conditions evolve.
