A southern Ontario winter weather system is moving into the region, bringing heavy snow, blowing snow, and bitterly cold temperatures on Today.
Environment and Climate Change Canada says communities across Durham Region, including Oshawa, Pickering, Whitby, Ajax, and Clarington, can expect 15 to 25 centimetres of snowfall, along with local blowing snow and reduced visibility.
Daytime temperatures in Durham are expected to reach -10 C, with wind chill values near -24 C in the morning, improving slightly by the afternoon. Winds could gust up to 50 km/h, increasing the risk of hazardous travel conditions.
Across much of southern Ontario, including Mississauga, Brampton, Halton, and Hamilton, snowfall amounts of 10 to 20 centimetres are forecast, with strong winds and dangerously cold wind chills persisting into the night.
Overnight, snow in Durham is expected to taper off to light flurries, with an additional 5 to 10 centimetres possible. Temperatures will drop to -15 C, with wind chills falling back to -24 C overnight.
Residents are urged to exercise caution if travelling, allow extra time, and monitor local weather alerts as conditions may change rapidly.
