The Pickering candy investigation announced by Durham police November 5 concerns a sewing needle found loose among collected Halloween treats, not a needle discovered inside a candy wrapper.
Police say a family found the needle while sorting candy collected in the Sultana Square, Foxwood Trail and Braeburn Crescent area after trick-or-treating on October 31. No injuries were reported.
Police have not established how it got there
The service says the needle was not inside candy or chip packaging. Officers seized the items, and investigators are still working to determine how the foreign object became associated with the collected candy.
The announcement does not establish that a particular household distributed the needle or that any packaged treat in Pickering was deliberately tampered with. Those conclusions should not be inferred from the discovery.
The same police release discusses the separately reported Ajax incident involving wire embedded in a packaged gummy candy. The Pickering report is a different location and discovery, not another headline about that Ajax event.
Police remind parents and guardians to inspect treats before they are eaten and report suspicious items. Anyone with information can contact Durham Regional Police at 905-579-1520.
