The search for Oshawa missing pilot David Douglas has ended tragically after police confirmed that the 73-year-old was found dead with his submerged aircraft in Wolfe Lake in Ontario’s Kawartha region.

Douglas disappeared after taking off from Oshawa Executive Airport at approximately 8:30 a.m. Friday.

He had been expected to return to the airport roughly one hour later but never arrived, prompting a widespread search involving police, military search-and-rescue crews and other specialized resources.

The investigation eventually led crews to Wolfe Lake in Queen Elizabeth II Provincial Park, north of Lindsay, where the small blue-and-yellow home-built aircraft was located underwater.

Police later confirmed Douglas was inside the aircraft and had died.

Search Began After Pilot Failed to Return to Oshawa

Douglas was considered an experienced pilot who regularly flew in areas north of Lake Scugog and south of Kawartha Lakes.

When he failed to return to Oshawa Executive Airport as scheduled, authorities launched a search and asked members of the public to report any sightings or information that could help determine his location.

The aircraft’s last known area was believed to be near Balsam Lake.

That information became an important focus during the initial search.

Major Search-and-Rescue Operation Launched

The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre Trenton coordinated the initial search-and-rescue operation.

The centre, based at CFB Trenton, combines resources from the Royal Canadian Air Force and Canadian Coast Guard to respond to aviation and marine emergencies.

Search efforts included aircraft and other specialized resources operating throughout the Kawartha Lakes area.

A Super Hercules aircraft was among the equipment used during the operation.

Private aircraft and other agencies also helped search for the missing pilot.

Aircraft Debris Found in Wolfe Lake

The investigation eventually shifted from rescue to recovery after searchers located evidence connected to the missing plane in Wolfe Lake.

The lake is located within Queen Elizabeth II Provincial Park, north of Lindsay.

Crews identified debris from the blue-and-yellow single-seat home-built aircraft.

At that stage, however, Douglas had still not been located.

Ontario Provincial Police then continued the search with specialized resources.

OPP Dive Team Locates Aircraft and Pilot

The Oshawa missing pilot was ultimately located Tuesday following an extensive search involving multiple OPP units.

Resources included the OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit, Aviation Services, frontline officers and other specialized teams.

Searchers located the aircraft submerged in Wolfe Lake.

Police confirmed Douglas was inside and deceased.

An extraction plan is now being coordinated as investigators continue working at the scene.

The OPP extended condolences to Douglas’s family and loved ones and thanked members of the public who assisted during the search.

Lack of Active Transponder Complicated Search

The supplied report says the aircraft was believed not to have been equipped with, or using, an active transponder signal during the flight.

A working transponder can help air traffic and emergency authorities identify and track an aircraft electronically.

Without that signal, search crews had to rely more heavily on eyewitness reports, radar reconstruction and physical search operations.

That made determining the aircraft’s precise location more difficult.

Transportation Safety Board Investigating

The circumstances surrounding the crash are now being investigated by the Transportation Safety Board of Canada.

The federal agency investigates aviation occurrences with the goal of identifying safety issues and improving transportation safety.

No cause of the crash has been announced in the supplied information.

Authorities have also not provided conclusions about mechanical failure, weather, pilot actions or any other contributing factor.

Those questions will form part of the continuing investigation.

Tragic End to Multi-Day Search

The discovery brings a tragic conclusion to a search that began when Douglas failed to return to Oshawa on Friday.

What began as a rescue operation eventually became a missing-person and recovery investigation after the aircraft was found submerged.

The Oshawa missing pilot case drew assistance from military and civilian search organizations, police specialists and members of the public.

With Douglas now located, attention will turn to recovering the aircraft and determining what caused it to go down in Wolfe Lake.
