Oshawa Labour Day Event Returns to Memorial Park

The Oshawa Labour Day Event will return to Memorial Park this September after the City of Oshawa approved a permit for the Durham Region Labour Council following an earlier dispute over new rules governing events at the downtown park.

The Durham Region Labour Council had faced uncertainty over the future of its annual Labour Day celebration after the city introduced new event regulations earlier this year.

Those rules limited Memorial Park primarily to heritage and memorial ceremonies involving the war memorial, along with performing arts celebrations.

At the time, the city suggested the Labour Council move its event to Ed Broadbent Waterfront Park instead.

The organization pushed back, arguing that Memorial Park has deep historical and cultural ties to Oshawa’s labour movement.

The city has now issued the permit, allowing this year’s event to proceed at Memorial Park.

Labour Day Celebration Set for Sept. 7

The Oshawa Labour Day Event is scheduled for Sept. 7 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The event will include live music, local arts activities, labour speakers and traditional family-friendly programming.

Performers scheduled to appear include Ontario artists:

  • B.A. Johnston
  • Postman Dan
  • Plz Respond

The LivingRoom Community Art Studio will also participate with family art activities.

Face painting and balloon art are planned as well.

The event will continue to include labour speakers throughout the day, along with a summer luncheon featuring hot dogs and ice cream.

More Arts Programming Added This Year

Durham Region Labour Council secretary-treasurer Jeff Tomlinson said the organization added more arts and cultural programming in response to the city’s new requirements for Memorial Park events.

He said the additional local arts programming made sense regardless of the dispute and will now form a bigger part of the celebration.

The Labour Council was given one notable restriction for this year’s event: no bouncy castles.

Tomlinson said the restriction was not a major concern and would not significantly change the celebration.

Memorial Park Has Deep Labour History

Memorial Park has hosted Labour Day celebrations for more than a century.

The site also played an important role in Oshawa’s labour history during the 1937 General Motors auto workers’ strike.

Workers gathered at the park after employees at the GM plant walked off the job seeking improved working conditions.

That history was central to the Labour Council’s argument that Memorial Park remains an appropriate and meaningful location for the annual Labour Day event.

Tomlinson has previously described the park as closely tied to Oshawa’s working-class cultural heritage.

He also pointed to the site’s accessibility for people travelling from across Durham Region.

Event Could Have Left Oshawa

The Labour Council had indicated that if it could not secure a permit for Memorial Park, the event might have been moved outside Oshawa altogether.

That possibility added urgency to the dispute.

The organization has held its celebration at Memorial Park for decades and viewed the location as part of the event’s identity.

The city ultimately reversed course and approved this year’s permit.

However, Oshawa has not said that future Labour Day events will automatically be approved at Memorial Park.

The city said event applications will continue to be reviewed individually.

Media Attention May Have Influenced Decision

Tomlinson said he believes public attention surrounding the dispute may have contributed to the city’s decision.

The issue received media coverage and discussion on social media after the new restrictions became known.

He said the organization believes the city ultimately recognized that the celebration includes cultural and artistic elements and should be able to continue using Memorial Park.

Event Returns With Updated Format

The Oshawa Labour Day Event will therefore return to its traditional location with a slightly revised format.

The celebration will still feature labour speakers and community activities, but this year will place more emphasis on live performances and local arts.

For the Durham Region Labour Council, the decision preserves a long-standing connection between Labour Day celebrations and Memorial Park.

For Oshawa residents, it means one of the city’s longest-running annual public events will continue downtown on Sept. 7.
