The Oshawa Free Tree Program is returning this week, giving local residents an opportunity to receive a tree at no cost while helping expand the city’s tree canopy.

The annual giveaway is organized through the Oshawa Environmental Advisory Committee and is available exclusively to Oshawa residents on a first-come, first-served basis.

Registration opened Monday, Aug. 17 and will remain available until Friday, Aug. 21. However, residents interested in participating are encouraged to register as soon as possible because trees will be distributed based on the order in which registrations are received.

Each successful registrant will receive one free tree.

Three Tree Species Available

Residents taking part in the Oshawa Free Tree Program can choose from three species: White Pine, Sugar Maple and Burr Oak.

White Pine is a native tree found throughout much of Ontario and eastern Canada.

Sugar Maple, one of Canada’s best-known trees, is a large deciduous species recognized for its distinctive leaves and seasonal colour. It is also Canada’s national tree.

Burr Oak is a common oak species in Ontario and is found throughout southern parts of the province.

The selection gives Oshawa homeowners several options when deciding which tree may be appropriate for their property.

Residents should consider the available space and future size of the selected species before planting.

Registration Required for Free Tree

Residents cannot simply arrive at the distribution event to claim a tree. Advance registration is required.

The online registration period runs from Aug. 17 through Aug. 21.

Although the registration form remains available for several days, submitting an application does not necessarily guarantee that a tree will be available.

Trees will be allocated according to registration order while supplies last.

Following the registration period, applicants will receive information about the status of their submission.

The city is expected to contact registrants by email or telephone, depending on the contact information they provided, by Friday, Sept. 4.

Tree Pickup Scheduled for Sept. 12

Successful participants must be available to collect their tree on the morning of Saturday, Sept. 12.

Anyone who cannot personally attend can identify another person who will collect the tree on their behalf during the registration process.

The giveaway will operate rain or shine.

Organizers are also using a vehicle-based pickup process.

Residents collecting trees are asked to remain inside their vehicles and open the trunk so an attendant can load the tree.

This system is intended to make the distribution process straightforward while allowing organizers to efficiently provide trees to registered residents.

Program Aims to Expand Oshawa’s Tree Canopy

The broader purpose of the Oshawa Free Tree Program is to increase tree coverage throughout the city.

Trees can provide numerous benefits in urban environments, including shade, habitat and improvements to neighbourhood green space.

As trees mature, they can also contribute to a more extensive urban canopy across residential areas.

The annual giveaway allows individual property owners to participate directly by planting and caring for trees on their properties.

With White Pine, Sugar Maple and Burr Oak available this year, residents can select from species suited to Ontario’s environment.

Residents Encouraged to Register Early

Anyone interested in participating should register before the Aug. 21 deadline, but availability will depend on how quickly the available trees are claimed.

Successful registrants should also plan ahead for the Sept. 12 pickup date and ensure they have an appropriate location to plant their selected tree.

Residents seeking additional information about local environmental programs and trees can visit the City of Oshawa’s environmental resources.

The Oshawa Free Tree Program provides a simple opportunity for residents to add greenery to their properties while contributing to the city’s longer-term goal of expanding its urban tree canopy.
