Charges have been laid following an Oshawa armed person call that resulted in both a man and a police officer being shot, according to Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS).

The incident occurred on January 18 at a residence on Cedar Street in Oshawa. Police initially responded to what the Ontario Special Investigations Unit (SIU) described as a mental health call. During the interaction, a 27-year-old man armed with a knife was shot by an officer. A second officer was also struck by gunfire.

DRPS confirmed that the SIU has invoked its mandate and taken over the investigation. Police say the accused, a 27-year-old Oshawa resident, has been charged with Assaulting a Peace Officer with a Weapon and Possession of a Weapon Dangerous to the Public. He was held for a bail hearing. Further details are available through DRPS.

“DRPS is fully cooperating with the SIU and cannot release further details regarding this incident,” police said in a statement, directing anyone with information to contact the SIU.

Durham Region Chair and CEO John Henry praised responding officers and emergency services, noting the risks officers face during complex calls.

“Every day, members of DRPS put themselves in harm’s way to keep our communities safe,” Henry said, adding that the injured officer is now in stable condition.

Oshawa Mayor Dan Carter also expressed concern, offering well wishes for the officer’s recovery.

“This is an extremely tragic event,” Carter said. “We extend our heartfelt concerns to the officer and their loved ones.”

The Oshawa armed person call remains under investigation by the SIU.
