As rising temperatures and spring rains settle over the Durham Region, local homeowners are being warned that the annual Ontario Spring Ant Surge 2026 is more than just a seasonal nuisance. While common pavement ants are frequently spotted near interlocking stone driveways in Ajax and Pickering, pest control experts are seeing an early rise in Carpenter Ant activity. Unlike nuisance species, carpenter ants pose a significant structural threat, capable of hollowing out wall voids and structural beams, particularly in older residential pockets of Oshawa and Whitby where water-damaged wood may be present.

Carpenter Ants vs. Pavement Ants

Understanding the distinction between species is critical during the Ontario Spring Ant Surge 2026:

  • Carpenter Ants: These are among the largest ants in Ontario, typically black and known for nesting in wood. While they do not eat wood (like termites), they chew through it to create galleries. Telltale signs include piles of “frass” (sawdust mixed with insect parts) near baseboards or under patio door sills.

  • Pavement Ants: Much smaller and common around foundations, these ants displace soil under sidewalks and driveways. While they can enter basements through tiny cracks, they are primarily a nuisance rather than a structural danger.

The “Ant Highway” Prevention Strategy

To mitigate the impact of the Ontario Spring Ant Surge 2026, experts from Abell Pest Control recommend an “Integrated Pest Management” approach. Homeowners are encouraged to:

  1. Trim Vegetation: Ensure tree branches do not touch the walls or roof of the house, as these act as bridges for ants to bypass foundation treatments.

  2. Manage Woodpiles: Keep firewood stored at least 20 feet away from the home’s exterior to prevent transferring dormant colonies inside.

  3. Seal Entry Points: Use caulk to seal gaps around windows, doors, and utility lines, especially near the ground level.

  4. Reduce Moisture: Repair leaky gutters and AC units, as carpenter ants are primarily attracted to softened, moisture-compromised wood.

Regulatory Warning on Pesticides

Health Canada is using the Ontario Spring Ant Surge 2026 to remind residents about the legal use of insecticides. Consumers should only use products with a Pest Control Products (PCP) number on the label. Ordering high-concentration pesticides from outside Canada is illegal and potentially dangerous to local pets and wildlife. For those seeking non-chemical alternatives, Diatomaceous Earth—a natural powder that dehydrates insects—is recommended for use in dry cracks and crevices.

When to Call a Professional

While hardware store gels and baits can be effective for small colonies, the Ontario Spring Ant Surge 2026 can involve massive underground networks. A single colony can house over a million ants; if a DIY treatment only kills the workers but fails to reach the queen, the infestation will persist. If you see “winged” ants inside your home, this often indicates a mature, established colony within the structure, and professional intervention is highly advised to prevent long-term damage to the home’s framing.
