Oshawa Council is considering expanding recreational facilities in the city after receiving community requests for additional North Oshawa pickleball courts and a new cricket field.
City officials say residents have raised concerns about the lack of outdoor pickleball facilities in rapidly growing neighbourhoods in North Oshawa, particularly near the Costco retail area where recreational options remain limited.
According to discussions at council, interest in North Oshawa pickleball courts has increased significantly as the sport continues growing in popularity across Ontario among players of all ages.
Residents told council that many people currently have to travel to other parts of Oshawa to access dedicated pickleball courts, creating challenges for seniors, families, and individuals seeking nearby recreational opportunities.
The resident request highlighted that pickleball is primarily played outdoors during warmer months, creating high seasonal demand for accessible courts throughout spring and summer.
Following council discussions, Oshawa officials approved a motion directing city staff to investigate opportunities for additional North Oshawa pickleball courts in response to growing community interest.
In addition to pickleball concerns, Oshawa Council also revisited discussions surrounding the possibility of adding a cricket field in North Oshawa.
Council had previously considered including the cricket field proposal within the mayor’s 2026 budget discussions, but the project was not included at that time. Despite this, community interest in cricket facilities has reportedly continued increasing throughout Oshawa.
As a result, council has now directed staff to investigate potential locations for a future cricket field and explore available grant funding opportunities connected to the project.
City staff were also instructed to meet with representatives of a new non-profit organization currently being formed to support local cricket development and recreational programming.
The growing demand for both North Oshawa pickleball courts and cricket infrastructure reflects changing recreational trends and population growth within Durham Region communities.
Pickleball has become one of Canada’s fastest-growing recreational sports, attracting participants across multiple age groups due to its accessibility and relatively low-cost entry requirements.
At the same time, cricket participation has expanded significantly across the Greater Toronto Area and Durham Region as local communities continue advocating for more dedicated playing fields and facilities.
City officials say investigating additional recreational infrastructure is part of Oshawa’s ongoing efforts to respond to changing community needs and improve access to sports and outdoor activities.
No final decisions have yet been made regarding the locations, timelines, or funding for either the proposed North Oshawa pickleball courts or cricket field projects.
Further updates are expected as city staff continue reviewing opportunities and reporting back to council.
