Residents across Durham Region and southern Ontario should prepare for wet and windy conditions as the May 23 weather southern Ontario forecast calls for significant rainfall and strong wind gusts throughout Saturday.
Environment Canada says areas including Oshawa, Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Hamilton, Niagara Falls, and other parts of the Greater Toronto Area can expect cloudy skies with steady rain beginning Saturday morning.
According to the forecast, the May 23 weather southern Ontario system could bring between 10 mm and 15 mm of rainfall across much of the GTA, while Hamilton could receive up to 20 mm and Niagara Falls may see as much as 25 mm of rain during the day.
In Durham Region, Oshawa is expected to experience continued rainfall into Saturday evening, with forecasts suggesting as much as 20 mm of additional rain overnight.
Environment Canada also warns that the May 23 weather southern Ontario system will include strong wind gusts reaching up to 50 km/h during the afternoon and evening hours.
Temperatures are expected to remain cool for late May, with daytime highs around 11°C across much of southern Ontario, including Mississauga and nearby communities.
Saturday night is forecast to remain rainy across the region, with another 10 mm of rainfall possible across parts of the GTA before conditions gradually improve overnight.
Meteorologists say the strongest winds associated with the May 23 weather southern Ontario forecast are expected to weaken around midnight, although cloudy skies and lingering showers may continue into Sunday.
Environment Canada’s extended forecast currently predicts cloudy conditions and a 40 per cent chance of showers for Sunday, with temperatures warming to approximately 20°C during the day.
Monday’s forecast for southern Ontario includes cloudy skies with a 30 per cent chance of showers and warmer temperatures reaching around 22°C.
Weather officials advise residents to use caution while driving during periods of heavy rain and strong winds, particularly on highways and open roads where visibility and road conditions may quickly change.
Strong wind gusts connected to the May 23 weather southern Ontario system could also create difficult travel conditions for cyclists, pedestrians, and drivers of larger vehicles.
Residents are encouraged to secure outdoor furniture, garbage bins, and loose items ahead of the strongest winds expected Saturday afternoon and evening.
The rainy conditions arrive after several periods of warmer spring weather throughout southern Ontario and may impact outdoor events, sports activities, and long weekend travel plans across Durham Region.
Environment Canada says additional updates and weather advisories may be issued if rainfall totals or wind conditions intensify throughout the weekend.
