Jane’s Walk is an annual global festival of free, citizen-led walking conversations inspired by the lasting legacy of urbanist and community activist Jane Jacobs. The movement encourages people to get out and explore their own communities, share personal stories about their neighbourhoods, and engage in meaningful conversations about the built environment and how cities and towns can be designed to better serve the people who live in them.

The Historic Whitby Walking Tour is a perfect example of the Jane’s Walk spirit in action, bringing community members together to appreciate and understand the deep historical significance of their local built environment while fostering a stronger and more meaningful connection to the place they call home in Durham Region.

The Werden’s Plan Heritage Conservation District is one of Whitby’s most treasured and beloved neighbourhoods, featuring a remarkable and well-preserved collection of heritage properties that showcase a variety of architectural styles from different periods in the community’s long development history. The entire district has been carefully preserved and protected to maintain its distinctive historical character and enduring charm for future generations to enjoy.

The event is being organized by Lisa Johnson from the Lynde House Museum, Whitby’s dedicated community museum that is committed to preserving and sharing local heritage with the public. For more information about the walking tour or the museum’s other programs and upcoming events, interested participants can contact the Lynde House Museum directly at 905-665-3131 or visit their official website online.

Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable walking shoes and dress appropriately for the weather conditions, as the tour will proceed rain or shine through the beautiful heritage neighbourhood streets. This family-friendly event is open to all ages and provides a wonderful educational opportunity for history enthusiasts and anyone curious about Whitby’s historic built landscape.
