Durham Halloween safety advice from regional police is putting visibility and careful road use at the centre of preparations for trick-or-treating on Saturday, October 31.
In an October 30 notice, Durham Regional Police offered a short checklist for people heading out and for drivers sharing neighbourhood streets with them.
Make yourself visible
Police recommend bright or reflective clothing and carrying a flashlight or glow stick. Their advice also calls for using designated crosswalks and looking both ways before crossing.
Drivers are being reminded to remain alert and reduce their speed. The notice does not announce a particular road closure, enforcement operation or change to local traffic rules.
Choose well-lit stops
The service advises trick-or-treaters to visit only well-lit homes and not to enter a stranger’s house.
The Durham Halloween safety reminder was posted ahead of Halloween night and applies across the region. It is separate from Ajax Fire and Emergency Services’ earlier seasonal guidance about candles, decorations and fire prevention.
