Residents are invited to discover the rich history and practical uses of heritage herbs during the Herb Harvest event at the Uxbridge Historical Centre.
Taking place from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., the educational evening offers participants the opportunity to learn about traditional herbs grown in the Centre’s Heritage Herb Garden while taking home a fresh harvest of their own.
The event will feature a special presentation by Mama Richter of Richter’s Herbs, a well-known local herb expert who will share insights into the history, cultivation, and culinary uses of herbs commonly grown by early settlers and pioneer families.
Guests will learn how many of these traditional herbs can be incorporated into everyday cooking, home gardening, and natural wellness practices while exploring the important role they played in Ontario’s early communities.
Following the educational talk, participants will have the opportunity to harvest herbs directly from the Heritage Herb Garden, allowing them to take home fresh herbs to use in their own kitchens.
The Heritage Herb Garden has recently undergone significant improvements thanks to the efforts of the Uxbridge Horticultural Society, whose volunteers helped revamp and enhance the garden for visitors to enjoy.
The event celebrates both local gardening traditions and the region’s agricultural heritage while encouraging residents to learn more about sustainable gardening and the many benefits of growing herbs at home.
Held on the beautiful grounds of the Uxbridge Historical Centre, Herb Harvest combines history, gardening, education, and community involvement in a relaxed outdoor setting.
Whether you’re an experienced gardener, an enthusiastic home cook, or simply interested in learning more about heritage plants, the event offers valuable knowledge and a hands-on experience suitable for all ages.
Organizers encourage attendees to arrive on time to enjoy the full presentation and participate in the herb harvesting activity.
Herb Harvest is one of several seasonal programs hosted at the Uxbridge Historical Centre, highlighting local history while offering educational experiences that connect visitors with the traditions of Durham Region’s early settlers.
