The first Durham Newcomer Day will take place Saturday, September 26, bringing services, cultural programming and family activities to Regional Headquarters in Whitby.
The free event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 605 Rossland Road East. It will be held rain or shine, with indoor and outdoor activities planned.
Services and community connections
Durham Region is organizing the event in partnership with the Durham Employment and Newcomer Centre. New residents will be able to learn about local programs, connect with service providers and find resources intended to help people settle, work and participate in community life.
Long-time residents are also invited. The Region describes the day as both a welcome event and an opportunity for people from different backgrounds to meet, share experiences and learn from one another.
Performances, exhibits and children’s activities
The program includes cultural performances, community exhibits, a vendor marketplace and children’s activities. The Region says special activities for a range of ages will be offered throughout the event.

A first for Durham Region
Durham Newcomer Day is being presented as the first event of its kind organized by the Region. Its purpose goes beyond showcasing cultures: the day is designed to make practical connections between newcomers and organizations that can help with employment, settlement and community participation.
The location at Regional Headquarters is served by Durham Region Transit. Visitors travelling from outside Whitby should review weekend schedules in advance, as transit frequencies can differ from weekday service.
