A 23-year-old male from Whitby has been arrested and faces a series of serious charges following a comprehensive investigation by the Internet Child Exploitation Unit. The investigation focused on allegations regarding child luring and the possession and distribution of sexual abuse and exploitation material. The accused was taken into custody after police executed a search warrant at a residence in Whitby earlier this year.

The police investigation was initiated in late 2025 when authorities began looking into allegations involving a male suspect accused of luring two young females, aged 12 and 13, through online communication. The suspect allegedly utilized popular social media platforms to facilitate these interactions. Specific accounts were identified during the probe, including a Reddit username and a Snapchat handle, which were allegedly used to solicit sexual abuse and exploitation materials from the victims.

In 2026, investigators with the Internet Child Exploitation Unit acted on the gathered evidence to execute a search warrant at the suspect’s residence. During the execution of the warrant, several electronic devices were successfully located and seized by police for forensic analysis. The suspect was present at the Whitby residence at the time of the search and was apprehended without incident, allowing the investigation to proceed to the charging phase.

The accused has been identified as Manu Sugunakumar, a 23-year-old resident of Whitby. Police have confirmed that Sugunakumar is currently employed at Durham College. Given the nature of the allegations and the suspect’s potential access to the community through his place of employment, law enforcement officials have expressed significant concerns that there may be additional victims who have not yet come forward to report similar incidents.

Manu Sugunakumar has been formally charged with multiple offences related to the investigation. These include two counts of luring a person under the age of 16 to facilitate sexual assault, as well as two counts of luring a person under 16 to facilitate sexual interference. Furthermore, he faces three counts of luring a person under 18 to facilitate the making of child sexual abuse and exploitation material, highlighting the severity of the accusations.

The list of additional charges against the Whitby male includes making sexually explicit material available to a person under 18 for the specific purpose of facilitating child sexual abuse and exploitation material. He is also charged with luring a person under 16 to facilitate an invitation to sexual touching and publishing an intimate image without consent. Following his arrest, the accused was held in custody for a bail hearing to determine his release status.

As this matter is now before the courts, it is important to note that the information contained in this release reflects facts obtained during the police investigation. These allegations have yet to be proven in a court of law. The legal process will determine the validity of the charges laid against the accused, who is presumed innocent until guilt is established.

Crimes of this nature are treated with the utmost severity by law enforcement agencies due to the long-lasting psychological impact on young victims. The Internet Child Exploitation Unit works tirelessly to identify individuals who use digital platforms to prey on children. As technology evolves, investigators must adapt to new methods used by offenders to conceal their identities and activities. The seizure of electronic devices in cases like this is crucial, as forensic analysis often reveals extensive evidence of criminal behavior, including communications with other potential victims.

The collaboration between the public and police is vital in solving these complex cases. Authorities emphasize that parents and guardians should maintain open lines of communication with their children regarding online safety. Monitoring the apps and social media platforms used by younger family members can serve as a protective measure. Anyone who suspects that a child is being targeted or exploited online is encouraged to report it immediately to police or Crime Stoppers to prevent further victimization.

Investigators are urging anyone with relevant information regarding this incident or the suspect to contact the authorities. Members of the public can reach Detective Constable McGovern of the Internet Child Exploitation Unit. Alternatively, anonymous information can be submitted to Durham Regional Crime Stoppers via telephone or their official online platform. Tipsters providing information that leads to an arrest may be eligible for a cash reward.
