An Ajax recovery story shared by Lakeridge Health is putting a personal face on the role of treatment, everyday effort and community connection in rebuilding life after severe mental-health struggles.

In an account published October 19, the health organization introduced Michael, who moved from British Columbia to Ajax in 2025. He described a difficult period of depression and anxiety after leaving a place he had called home for 65 years.

Lakeridge Health’s report follows his appearance at the recent Recovery Awareness Celebration at Jubilee Pavilion in Oshawa, where he spoke to approximately 90 guests. His experience was one of several shared at the event.

Small steps toward everyday life

Michael’s wife, Charmaine, described how the outgoing person she knew became withdrawn. The loss of their usual companionship and laughter was part of the strain the couple experienced.

The account describes recovery as a process involving care, persistence and practical skills, rather than a single turning point. Michael kept attending treatment and working to reconnect with daily activities, including when those steps felt difficult.

After receiving treatment at Ontario Shores, he joined a nine-week group therapy program through the mental-health team at Lakeridge Health’s Ajax Pickering Hospital. He credited tools from the program, and another participant’s understanding of the loss he felt, with helping him move forward.

For Charmaine, signs of change appeared in ordinary moments: helping around the house, accepting invitations and making a friend. Michael described learning to treat himself more kindly and draw on the skills he had developed when setbacks occurred.

His account does not present recovery as a uniform timetable or a guaranteed result for everyone. Instead, it describes one person’s continuing journey, with support from family, care providers and other people who understood aspects of his experience.

Oshawa gathering celebrates lived experience

The 21st annual Recovery Awareness Celebration was hosted by Lakeridge Health’s Pinewood Centre and Durham Mental Health Services. Clients, families, care providers and community partners attended the breakfast, which also featured performances by the Peer Support music group.

The organization says the gathering was intended to make recovery visible and challenge stigma by giving people space to share their own experiences. It took place during mental-health awareness observances and ahead of World Mental Health Day on October 10; the October 19 story did not provide an exact event date.

Beth Brannon, Lakeridge Health’s senior director of mental health and addictions, emphasized the courage involved in sharing personal experiences and the different meanings recovery can have for each person.

Connecting hospital and community care

Lakeridge Health linked the story to its Together, Best Mental Health strategy, which aims to make compassionate care easier to access and better connected throughout recovery.

The organization also described a partnership with Ontario Shores focused on treatment and transitions between hospital and community services. Its Bridging Clinic, developed with CAMH, offers short-term support after an emergency department visit while connecting people to continuing care.

The Ajax recovery story is an account of lived experience, not a newly announced treatment or a clinical claim about what will work for every patient. Its local message is the importance Michael and Charmaine placed on care, connection and finding joy in everyday life again.
