The Town of Ajax will pilot an innovative asphalt recycling technology on Rossland Road later this month, resurfacing a stretch between Audley Road and Lake Ridge Road using Hot In-Place Recycling (HIR), the town announced October 20.
Work is scheduled to begin October 26, weather permitting, and is expected to take about two days. Instead of removing and replacing the road surface, HIR heats the existing asphalt and remixes it in place. The town says the method costs roughly 44 per cent less than traditional resurfacing, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions by up to 72 per cent and petroleum-based materials by up to 74 per cent.
The equipment used for the pilot was engineered locally in Ajax. The town says it will monitor the resurfaced section’s performance over four years to assess how the recycled surface holds up. The work is being delivered through the town’s existing 2026 Road Resurfacing Contract, the announcement says.
