The Oshawa arena renovation project is moving forward as the city prepares to secure $20 million in debenture funding to begin the first phase of a major $50 million upgrade to the Tribute Communities Centre.

The City of Oshawa will request that the Region of Durham issue the debenture in spring 2026 to help finance the initial stage of the long-anticipated modernization project. Construction is expected to begin later this year, marking a significant step toward revitalizing one of the region’s key sports and entertainment venues.

This large-scale renovation stems from a landmark agreement reached last year between the City of Oshawa, the Oshawa Generals hockey team, and Oak View Group, the facility’s long-time operator. The deal includes a 30-year lease extension, ensuring the Generals will remain in Oshawa for decades to come.

The agreement followed intense negotiations, during which team owner Rocco Tullio had raised concerns about the future of the franchise in the city. The final deal secured not only the team’s long-term presence but also a shared commitment to modernizing the arena.

The Oshawa arena renovation project will include several major upgrades designed to enhance both fan experience and facility performance. Planned improvements include:

  • Expansion of the main entrance

  • Interior renovations and modernization

  • Seating upgrades to accommodate at least 7,000 spectators

  • Enhanced concession areas

  • Improved player facilities to meet top-tier standards

In addition, the Oshawa Sports Hall of Fame will be relocated to a prominent new location at the front of the arena, offering 24/7 public visibility and celebrating the city’s rich sports history.

Oak View Group has also committed to investing $1 million into infrastructure improvements, including upgraded concession services. The modernization is expected to position the Tribute Communities Centre as a stronger contender for hosting major events, including the prestigious Memorial Cup, as well as concerts and entertainment shows.

City officials have emphasized that the project will not impact local tax rates, as funding will come from a combination of sources. These include revenues from the new agreements with the Generals and Oak View Group, the Municipal Accommodation Tax, and additional income generated through seating and event attendance.

The renovation will be carried out in phases over several years to minimize disruptions to ongoing events, including Oshawa Generals games, Oshawa FireWolves lacrosse matches, and other scheduled performances.

The Tribute Communities Centre has already seen previous investments, including a new scoreboard and upgraded player amenities such as a weight room, medical facilities, and an NHL-calibre lounge. However, this new project represents the most comprehensive upgrade in the arena’s history.

The Oshawa arena renovation project is seen as a critical investment in the city’s future, supporting economic growth, tourism, and community engagement while ensuring the facility remains competitive in attracting large-scale events.

As the project moves into its first phase, residents and fans can expect a transformed venue that reflects Oshawa’s commitment to sports, entertainment, and long-term development.
